Two key concepts in backup and recovery are RTO and RPO. RTO or Recovery Time Objective is the maximum allowable time required to recover the system after an outage. On the other hand, RPO or Recovery Point Objective is the maximum loss of data in terms of time that can be tolerated. For instance, if RPO is one hour, then the organization must be able to recover data up to one hour ago. RTO and RPO work hand in hand in determining the schedule for backup and recovery planning.
